I didn’t want to make it too long, but the official title of the post would be Hourglass Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick vs. Smashbox Be Legendary Long-Wear Lip Lacquer. I guess brands want to make it sound fancy, but they’re basically both liquid lipsticks. I purchased the Hourglass after having good experiences with the brand and reading some positive reviews. (And my sister just got me another shade!) The Smashbox Lip Lacquer I got in my December Popsugar Box.
The applicator for the Smashbox is a little funky, a little skinnier near the middle. The product itself has a really nice gloss to it, but it’s hard to make it look good if your lips are dry, because the formula catches on the dry patches.
The Hourglass has your normal doefoot applicator. It dries matte, darker than what it appears in the tube. Liquid lipsticks usually dry a bit more glossy, so I wasn’t expecting how matte it was.
So how do they compare?
The Smashbox has more shine and acts like a more pigmented, thicker lip gloss, while the Hourglass really latches onto your lips and feels like a matte lipstick.
The Hourglass has much longer wear time, but the Smashbox is more moisturizing.
The pigmentation and staying power on the Hourglass is just superb. Even though the Smashbox is a bit of a deeper color and you would expect it to leave a darker stain, the Hourglass leaves a much more powerful stain.
For me, the Hourglass Liquid Lipstick is the hands-down winner. Even though it is a bit drying, the color really just stays put. Right when I first applied it, my first thought was, “Now I know what lipstick I’ll be using on Valentine’s Day.” I’m also really big on a stain, so the lips don’t look weird as the color wears. I don’t recommend the Smashbox – it catches on dry patches and wears off more easily.
